U mnogim civiliziranim društvima poliandrija se smatra tabu temom. Nasuprot tome, Nepal ima bogatu tradiciju ove prakse koja se poštuje i održava dugi niz godina. Dok neki muškarci u raznim zemljama biraju poligamiju kako bi poboljšali svoje živote, neke se žene legalno udaju za braću svojih muževa kako bi stvorile kohezivnu obiteljsku jedinicu. Tradicija poliandrije, gdje je jedna žena udana za nekoliko muževa, i danas postoji u Nepalu i priznata je zakonom.
- Ovaj tip bračnog dogovora posebno je raširen u sjevernim i sjeveroistočnim dijelovima zemlje, gdje je malo zemlje i braća radije ostaju zajedno nakon vjenčanja. Kao rezultat toga, nije neobično da ova braća dijele jednu ženu i suživot u zajedničkom kućanstvu ili na zajedničkom imanju. Prije više od 28 stoljeća nastala je drevna tradicija. U okviru staroindijskog epa “Mahabharata”, princeza Draupadi preklinjala je boga Šivu za muža. Hrabra heroina uputila je svoj zahtjev božanstvu pet puta, i svaki put joj je želja uslišana, što je dovelo do božanskog dara pet muževa.
Ovaj dugogodišnji običaj nastavlja se u regijama Nepala kroz mnoge generacije. Kako ti osebujni brakovi, u kojima jedna žena ima više muževa, funkcioniraju u stvarnosti? U ovoj zajednici dužnosti koje su obično povezane sa ženama obavljaju muškarci. Jedan se čovjek brine za usjeve u poljima, drugi izrađuje prostirke i košare za prodaju. Treći je odgovoran za prodaju tih stvari na tržnici, dok četvrti nadzire kućanske poslove. Nadalje, peti muškarac brine o djeci, dok šesti radi kako bi uzdržavao obitelj.
- Što se tiče društvenih normi, ženama je pripisana uloga predstavljanja ljepote. Predviđeno je da se ukrašavaju nakitom izrađenim od tirkiza i koralja jer ti materijali predstavljaju sklad i mir unutar obiteljske zajednice. Sreća i zadovoljstvo žene imaju značajnu vrijednost za muškarce u njezinoj obitelji. Moglo bi se postaviti pitanje zašto žene s oklijevanjem ulaze u te brakove.
Odnosima formiranim unutar tih zajednica nedostaje ikakav privid ljubavi. Obično je najstariji brat taj koji odabire svoju ženu, a potom je dijeli sa svojom mlađom braćom i sestrama. Najstariji brat diktira dinamiku tih intimnih odnosa, prisiljavajući ženu da ispuni potrebe svakog brata i rađa njihovu djecu. Svaki brat dobiva dio nasljedstva od najstarijeg brata i sestre. Naime, otac braće također uživa pravo na intimnost sa svojom snahom i on to pravo i koristi.
- Ako mlađa braća još nisu punoljetna, žena preuzima odgovornost za njihov odgoj, vođenje kroz njihov prijelaz u odraslu dob i učinkovito preuzimanje uloge njihove majke. Unatoč tome što imaju zakonsko pravo razvesti se od neprikladnog supružnika, žene rijetko koriste tu opciju zbog zabrinutosti o društvenim posljedicama i potencijalnom gubitku svog društvenog položaja.
Značajan aspekt ove zajednice je njezino bogatstvo, koje često premašuje bogatstvo tipičnih kućanstava. Obitelji unutar ove skupine posjeduju financijska sredstva koja su često mnogo veća od onih u običnim obiteljima. Ako se jedan brat ili sestra odluče razdvojiti, imanje se dijeli na jednake dijelove, što omogućuje kontinuirani rast imovine. U Nepalu je poliandrija češća praksa koja nadmašuje poligamiju.
- Umjesto da žele dominirati u kućanstvu, muškarci se fokusiraju na stvaranje sigurnog i mirnog životnog prostora, minimizirajući konkurenciju. Unutar ovih plemena žene zauzimaju poseban položaj, zaštićene od pitanja poput “Čije je ovo dijete?” i “Tko će naslijediti?” Ideje vlasništva i nasljeđivanja su nevažne, jer se sva djeca smatraju zajedničkom, nasljeđujući jednake dijelove imanja.
